He leido críticas pro y contra Tolkien, pro y contra Peter Jackson pero ninguna tan singular y hasta diría genial como la que hace el autor británico China Mieville , escritor de fantasía y además militante socialista. China no es un definitivamente fanático de Tolkien y en su artículo Tolkien – Middle Earth Meets Middle England
expone sus razones (clichés linguisticos y temáticos). Lo que me llama la atención es que en un momento admite la gran influencia de Tolkien y El Señor de los Anillos dentro de la literatura fantástica, destacando su mayor contribución al género: la construcción de un mundo sistemático secundario.

But Tolkien’s most important contribution by far, and what is at the heart of the real revolution he effected in literature, was his construction of a systematic secondary world. There had been plenty of invented worlds in fantasy before, but they were vague and ad hoc, defined moment to moment by the needs of the story. Tolkien reversed that. He started with the world, plotted it obsessively, delineating its history, geography and mythology before writing the stories. He introduced an extraordinary element of rigour to the genre.

Mieville pone a Tolkien entre Lewis y Williams, según él lo peor y lo mejor de los Inklings respectivamente y como todo buen anti-Tolkien se apoya en Moorcock. Luego se transporta al mundo del cine y le dedica unos párrafos a la adaptación de Peter Jackson. Para él, la película de PJ le imprime fuerza a la obra de Tolkien, quita lo que debe de quitar (adiós Tom Bombadil) y se apoya en sólidas actuaciones y buenos efectos especiales . Finalmente agradece a PJ:

And after years of fantasy films which were little more than jokes, I watched The Lord of the Rings with something like gratitude – a feeling that finally we have what we deserve. The film is a passionate love affair between Jackson and the book. And, like all true love, it’s genuinely moving to watch, even if you’re not over-fond of one of the lovers.

Me temo que es un artículo que a pesar de que ya tiene unos años encima vale la pena leer.
